inramat 24/7 — by Sara Wallstedt & Emilia Elfvik
It began at HDK, where Sara and Emilia met through a shared fascination with material, form and the relationships between them. Today, they work side by side from their studio in Majorna, where they have developed a distinctive technique, a three-dimensional weave that brings textile thread and metal together to form an entirely new material.
Now on view at Vallgatan, “Inramat 24/7” brings their practice into the public space. Suspended within a vivid blue display window, an organic sculpture woven from metal wire transforms the storefront into a frame for observation. Visible around the clock, the installation invites passers-by to pause, look closer and experience the work from the street, regardless of the time of day.
t is a warm day in May, and the sun has just found its way between the buildings, casting light across Vallgatan in Gothenburg.
“Can you even see the window?” Emilia asks, tilting her head as she tries to look past the reflection of herself in the glass.
Emilia is an artist, and inside the window she is installing her latest work, created together with her colleague Sara. Behind the gleaming glass is a small, 24-cubic-metre space, its walls painted in the same vivid blue as the sky outside that day. Suspended at its centre is their newly produced sculpture, woven from metal wire. Its organic form, built around a grid-like structure and finished with long, combed strands of metal, creates both volume and movement. The artwork catches the attention of almost everyone passing by, which was precisely the intention behind the exhibition, aptly titled “Inramat 24/7”.
“We want to lower the threshold for engaging with art, and by exhibiting in a shop window, we believe art can reach more people.” — Sara and Emilia
But the story behind the artwork began long before the window was created. Sara and Emilia first met while studying at HDK Steneby and Stenebyskolan. Coming from different backgrounds, it was not an obvious path that they would become the artistic duo they are today. What they did share, however, was a clear ambition for their work: to communicate through art and, in doing so, build relationships.
Although they brought different skills and perspectives to their practice, over time they developed a new technique together, a form of three-dimensional weaving that allows them to combine textile and metal threads into an entirely new material of their own. It is the same material used to create the artwork now displayed on Vallgatan.
“We want to challenge conventions and preconceived ideas, which is why we are inspired by the expectations often associated with a particular material or technique.” — Sara and Emilia
From their years in education to a studio in Majorna, Sara and Emilia have built a creative sanctuary of their own, where their work takes shape through conversations about emotions, colours, and contrasts in material and form. In the studio, they listen to SAULT and Café Bambino while drinking freshly pressed coffee and eating Swedish apples. It has become more than just a workplace. It is also where their friendship has continued to grow.
“Being an artist can often be a solitary profession, and although we do not work together on every project we are involved in, we always have each other to bounce ideas off, work through solutions with, or simply discuss colour combinations. It is truly a joy to have someone like that close to you.” — Sara and Emilia
“What is it supposed to be?”
We are back in the present on Vallgatan. The exhibition “Inramat 24/7” is almost fully installed, and Sara and Emilia are preparing for the evening's event, where the public is invited to celebrate the launch. When asked what the sculpture in the window actually represents, they have no definitive answer.
“We leave the meaning of the artwork to the viewer. We simply want to make those passing by stop for a moment.” — Sara and Emilia
The exhibition will remain on view until the end of the summer, giving everyone the opportunity to stop by and form their own interpretation of an artwork shaped by years of friendship, experience, and creative exploration.
Welcome, whatever the day or time. Simply 24/7.
