Necklaces & Charms

At Vallgatan 12, you will find a carefully curated selection of Necklaces and charms from established and contemporary brands, with styles ranging from delicate chains and understated pendants to chunkier link necklaces, pearl necklaces, and sculptural Jewellery. The selection also includes separate charms and pendants that can be combined with different chains, allowing you to vary the necklace's length, proportions, and expression.

Necklaces are worn around the neck and can sit at different heights depending on the chain's length and construction. Shorter styles sit close to the neck, while longer chains extend lower over the chest. Length affects both how the necklace falls and how it works with, for example, necklines, shirts, and other Jewellery. Adjustable chains and multiple attachment points make it possible to change the length of some styles, while necklaces in fixed lengths retain a more defined position.

Common styles include chain necklaces, link necklaces, necklaces with pendants, pearl necklaces, and more rigid collar- or choker-inspired styles. Delicate chains can be worn alone or layered, while chunkier links add greater visual weight. Necklaces with pendants usually feature a central decorative element, while pearl necklaces are made up of connected pearls or stones. Charms can be fixed parts of a necklace or separate elements threaded onto or attached to compatible chains.

Metals such as gold, silver, and various metal alloys are commonly used in the manufacture of necklaces and charms. Sterling silver consists of at least 92.5 percent silver and is combined with other metals to increase the material's hardness. Solid gold is available in different karat levels, with karat indicating the proportion of pure gold in the alloy. Brass and stainless steel are also used as base materials and may have different surface treatments and platings.

Gold-plated necklaces and charms consist of a base material covered with a layer of gold. The thickness and manufacturing method of the coating vary and affect how the surface treatment changes with use. Gold vermeil is a form of gilding in which sterling silver is used as the base, and the gold coating must meet specific requirements regarding thickness and gold content to be called vermeil. Rhodium is also used as a surface treatment, particularly on some silver Jewellery, to create an even surface and reduce direct oxidation of the metal beneath the coating.

Necklaces and charms may also contain gemstones, natural stones, pearls, glass, crystals, enamel, and other decorative materials. Natural stones and pearls can vary in texture, shape, and surface, meaning that individual pieces are not always identical. The hardness and sensitivity of the materials vary and affect how the Jewellery should be handled and stored.

The chain's construction affects the necklace's drape, movement, and visual character. Cable chains consist of individual oval links, while curb chains have links that are twisted so that the chain lies flatter. Figaro, box, and ball chains are other established constructions with different structures and degrees of flexibility. Chunkier link necklaces can be made up of larger individual elements, while finer chains use considerably smaller links for a more delicate look.

Clasps and attachments are central parts of the construction. Lobster clasps and spring rings are commonly used on chain necklaces, while chunkier styles may use box clasps, hooks, or other mechanisms. Extension chains make it possible to adjust the length within a certain range. Charms may be equipped with a fixed loop, an openable mechanism, or another type of attachment. The loop must be large enough for the chain with which the charm is to be combined, meaning that not all separate charms are compatible with all types of chains.

Details such as engravings, set stones, enamel, pearls, and sculpted forms can give necklaces and charms different expressions. Stones may, for example, be secured with prongs, bezels, or other types of settings, while charms can be designed as medallions, letters, symbols, or more abstract forms. Polished, brushed, hammered, and textured surfaces are used to create variation in the metal's finish.

Necklaces and charms transcend seasons and can be worn year-round. Shorter necklaces and delicate chains can be worn alone or layered at different lengths, while larger pendants and chunkier links can be worn as statement Jewellery. During warmer months, necklaces are often worn directly against the skin, while longer chains and larger charms can also be worn over knitwear, shirts, and other garments during the colder parts of the year.

Proper care is important to preserve the surface, links, clasps, and settings of a necklace or charm. Jewellery should generally be removed before showering, bathing, exercising, and coming into contact with cleaning products. Perfume, skincare, and cosmetics should be allowed to dry before putting on the Jewellery, as moisture and chemicals can affect plated surfaces and sensitive materials in particular. Silver can oxidize and darken over time and should be cleaned with products suited to the material. Gold-plated and plated Jewellery should be cleaned gently with a soft, dry cloth to reduce wear on the surface treatment. Necklaces should be stored in a dry place, preferably separately or laid flat, to reduce the risk of scratches and tangling.

Vallgatan 12's selection of necklaces and charms includes Jewellery in which material, length, proportions, and construction work together. From delicate chains and classic pendants to chunkier link necklaces, pearls, and separate charms, the selection offers styles that can be worn individually or combined in different ways.
