The placement and construction of pockets can provide practical storage, while a high collar or hood can offer additional protection from wind and weather. The fit must also allow sufficient room for movement and the layers worn beneath the jacket, particularly in styles intended for colder weather or physical activity.

Proper care is important for preserving a jacket’s material, fit, and function over time. Wool should be aired and cleaned according to the garment’s care instructions, while leather and suede require products suited to each material and should be protected from heavy moisture. Padded jackets should be washed and dried according to the manufacturer’s instructions so that the insulation retains its volume. For technical jackets, it is important to follow specific washing instructions, and the DWR treatment may need to be reactivated or renewed when water no longer beads on the surface.
